5 Myths About Natural Hair

Updated: Feb 1, 2021

Even though more than half of us wear our hair naturally we are still burdened by lots of misconceptions about it. Let's address 5 of those now.

  1. Shampoo is bad for natural hair. A clean scalp is a foundation for healthy natural hair. Failing to cleanse your scalp can allow bacteria to spread and cause scalp conditions

2. Kinky/curly hair is stronger than other hair types.

Naturally, Kinky/curly hair is more prone to breakage than its counterparts due to its loose cuticle layer and curl patterns.

3. Oil moisturizes hair.

This is one thing I repeatedly tell my clients. Oil is a sealant, therefore putting oil on your dry hair is doing nothing for hydration. Oil should be applied after water or a water-based moisturizer to seal in the moisture.

4. Split ends can be repaired with the right products.

Wrong! Once the end has split it has to be cut to prevent it from splitting up the strand. End of story.

5. You must know your hair type.

3b or 4c? Honestly, it doesn't matter. What really matters is knowing your hair's porosity and elasticity which aids in finding the right products and treatments needed for your hair.
